A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
