European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
