Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious cup on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the French league winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
