A shadow market for unapproved slimming medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Voice Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering products of uncertain source.
Some professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has removed violative material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.
Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Inside these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly significant health risks”.
