Why this Democratic Party Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This decision by the Democratic National Committee to suppress the publication regarding its own post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election appears shocking but to be expected. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a communications shop rather than an electoral entity devoted to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

An Environment of Conformity

Hesitant to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has continued under that legacy throughout this past year. Publishing an official autopsy could have demonstrated whether party leaders truly desire to promote public discourse regarding the errors that paved the way for Donald Trump to become president again. Instead, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there's nothing to glean following the stunning loss from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the report.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Might Have Addressed

Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would not dodge a series of difficult topics. These include:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Failing to retain of a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • The Decision to Run: The stubborn insistence by the incumbent to run again, coupled with an extremely delayed exit, is seen by some as robbing Democratic voters the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: While facing economic anxiety, the campaign reportedly accommodating elite contributors while failing to address the role of corporate greed.
  • The Gaza Factor: An unwillingness to shift a stance concerning a ongoing war is cited as losing key demographic groups, particularly with young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data shows a significant decline in votes for the candidate from the youth electorate.

A History Avoiding Accountability

The decision to withhold aligns with a recurring tendency of sidestepping hard truths. It recalls an episode where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress supported an incumbent's decision for running for re-election until a poor campaign event forced an exit.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters were repeatedly informing researchers that they opposed that candidate to be the nominee.

Financial Issues

A thorough report could examine issues about campaign spending, such as how much money were directed to insider consultants and media firms over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a staggering war chest in a short period.

The Larger Problem

At its core, the blockage of the official autopsy highlights a submission to party leaders responsible for a losing national race. The implication to the party's base – including millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to understand the lessons the leadership have learned from an analysis compiled from extensive interviews.

A party unwilling to critically review where it went wrong will struggle to break free from the rut which was so beneficial to their opponents.
